For my RVArt Talks, I interviewed Diego Sanchez. He is a local Richmond art that works in the painting and mixed media realm and is also the head of the art department at St. Catherine's. It was really nice to talk to someone in the realm of abstract art and to see their journey throughout the years. Diego, like me, is very intuitive with his work and likes to experiment. It surprised me how much work he had made over the past couple of months on about 100 pieces on sheets of paper just to experiment and see what was working with the composition and what wasn't. When I asked him about if he believed quantity was better than quality, he said it is important to his process that he makes a lot of work and that if you only make a couple of pieces you can get very attached to them.

Unlike other artist, she didn't go to college for art but rather after undergoing a brain injury painting became a part of her therapy. The way she dives into her work by having an emotion or simple idea is very interesting. Also during her process of recovering, Ms. Miller had to take a step back from her work once in a while which gave her the chance/ forced her to see what was working and what wasn't. I really connected with what she said about she relationship with realistic art. She said "I never considered myself like a really good artist because I was always
trying to do realism. I had a really good eye for things, and I would know like yeah it's not supposed to look like that right it's supposed to look better than that it's supposed to look more perfectionistic." That really struck home with me because the perfectionist in me thinks the same way, and it was cool to see her story of transitioning to abstract expressionism. This week I worked on a new piece involving lots of texture. I put acrylic paint with a glass medium and then went in and subtracted the paint away to create the curvy line. Then I filled in the curvy lines with different colors so that it would create circles.
For the past two week, my class has been working on figure drawing. I feel like over the weeks I have gotten better with the movement and the proportions of the figure. I have grown some by retraining my eye to look more at the figure rather than the sheet of paper. In the future, 1) I want to work on actually enjoying drawing these, and as a more realistic goal moving forward, I would be to work on the weight of the figure.
After last weeks conversation with Coach Hall, I bought three other canvases and experimented with them. I used the same type of technique I did with the first canvas in this project.
